2006/03/21 HYUNDAI FORTUNE SUFFERED A FIRE ON STERN
A HYUNDAI Merchant Marine vessel is reported to have sunk off the coast of Yemen on March 22.
According to Reuters, a series of fires and explosions tore through the accommodation and after cargo sections of the 5,551-TEU Hyundai Fortune, eventually causing the vessel to sink.
Two vessels came to the aid of the stricken Hyundai Fortune, after fire had broken out on board the vessel, rescuing 27 people, a statement issued by the US Naval Forces Central Command said.
One crew member from the vessel sustained non-critical injuries and was evacuated to a French Navy aircraft carrier to be treated and the remaining 26 unharmed crew members were returned to shore, Qatar's The Peninsula newspaper said.
The South Korea-registered containership was sailing from Asia to Europe on the New World Alliance's Asia/Europe Express (AEX) service at the time of the incident.
The cause of the explosions is not known at present.
